This is the first frame I've made by hand and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I was inspired by traditional cassetta frames and Dutch key frames. It has an antique black finish rubbed to expose the red tone underneath and buffed with wax and rottenstone. Rottenstone is basically very finely ground up limestone used either as an abrasive to polish things or, as in this case, to make something look antique. It looks surprisingly like regular household dust so it can give things an old "dusty" look.
It's also a closed corner frame. I used dowel joints which are much stronger and sturdier than the conventionally used v-nails that join commercial/mass produced frames.
It has a veneer with the grain going perpendicular to the corners which makes a cool diamond shape. The fillet around the painting I had to re-guild with silver-color metal leaf and then glazed with burnt umber a couple times before I got the look I wanted.
